Overview

What is KidsCanBall?

add remove

KidsCanBall was created by our ambassador Jordan Watson – How to DAD, who wanted a fun way to raise money for kids in need. Last year he challenged his mates Jono and Ben from The Hits to play handball against him for 24-hours straight.

This year they’re doing it all again, aiming to raise $1 million for kids in poverty. They need your support! We’re not asking you to play for 24 hours in a row (that’s crazy!) but we’d love you, your school, workplace or community group to join us by playing as much handball as you can across October.

What is handball?

add remove

Handball - or Four Square - is the game you’ll probably know from the school playground. All you need is a chalk-drawn court, a bouncy ball, and four players - King, Queen, Jack and Joker.

What are the rules? Can I make up my own rules?

The rules of handball can vary depending on which school you’re in (and that’s fine!) - but click here to see the basic rules.

Getting Started

Where can I get handballs from?

add remove

Thanks to our friends at ASB the first 250 schools to sign up after August 4th will get a handball kit delivered to their school. We find that a tennis ball or a high bounce ball also works well. Get in touch and we can see how we can support you with everything you need to take part – kidscanball@kidscan.org.nz

Do I have to be part of a team or school to fundraise?

add remove

No, you’re free to fundraise on your own - just create your own profile and get underway!

When can I start fundraising?

add remove

You can start fundraising the minute you sign up.

How do I ask people for money?

add remove

We’ll help with this process. Once you sign up, you’ll get an email template that you can personalise and send to your friends and family asking for their support. It will explain what KidsCanBall is, what we’re fundraising for, and the difference their donation will make.

The Cause

What will we do with your funds?

add remove

Every dollar raised through KidsCanBall goes to supporting Kiwi kids in need. Our ambitious goal of $1 million will help us support 10,000 children with essentials including food, shoes and jackets. We help ensure children arrive at school warm, fuelled and ready to learn.

How do you support schools?

add remove

We support 947 schools nationwide. Schools apply for KidsCan support, and join our waiting list. They are accepted into our programmes once we have funding to support them on an ongoing basis. They can then order what they need from our food, clothing and health products.

Nutritious food includes bread, spreads, yoghurt, tinned fruit, baked beans, scroggin, muesli bars and fruit pottles. We also offer hot lunches to schools who don’t qualify for the government’s Ka Ora, Ka Ako lunch programme, but still have hungry students.

Fleece-lined jackets are provided to the entire school roll to encourage inclusiveness, and shoes and socks are discretely given to students identified by the school as needing them. Health products including nit treatment are ordered as needed.

How do you ensure your support reaches the children who need it most?

add remove

We work very closely with our partner schools. Staff have access to our portal and order what they need. They know their students best, and work out how to best get support to them. Some schools run breakfast and lunch clubs, some have snacks in their classrooms or at reception, some discreetly add food to students’ bags. Everything is done to reduce stigma and uphold the students’ mana.

How do you support early childhood centres?

add remove

KidsCan partners with early childhood centres nationwide. We provide wraparound support to more than 6,000 preschoolers in 200 ECE centres. Every child receives a healthy lunch including fruit and yoghurt, a warm jacket, gumboots, shoes and socks and health products.

With Government funding, we have been able to extend our ECE Food programme to more than 8,000 more preschoolers. Ingredients are delivered every week like a meal kit, and staff put meals together each day. Centres select from a range of recipes which children love, including mac and cheese, spaghetti bolognese, tuna pasta and chicken chop suey.
